Blood Pressure Monitoring

Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure. It occurs when there is too much pressure in the blood vessels.

While most people with hypertension have no symptoms, it can sometimes cause headaches, shortness of breath or nosebleeds. These symptoms, however, are not specific to hypertension and usually do not occur until blood pressure is very high.
Hypertension puts undue strain on the heart and damages the internal organs over time, which can lead to serious health problems (e.g., heart failure, myocardial infarction, kidney failure, stroke). This is why screening and treatment are so very important when it comes to preventing long-term complications.

Come to our pharmacy and check your blood pressure at no cost.

Children’s Health

Normal temperature, measured at different body sites, vary. A child is considered feverish if:

  • Rectal temperature is higher than 38.0 °C / 100.4 °F
  • Oral temperature is higher than 37.5 °C / 99.5 °F
  • Tympanic temperature is higher than 38.0 °C / 100.4 °F
  • Axillary (armpit) temperature is higher than 37.5 °C / 99.5 °F.

Infections, gastrointestinal problems and immunizations are the most common causes of fever in children. At anytime, babies younger than 3 months old with a fever should see a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.

Head Lice

Head lice are small greyish insects that live on the scalp. They are parasites that feed on a person’s blood. There are two things to look for when inspecting someone’s scalp for head lice:

  • Nits: Head lice lay small beige eggs (called nits) near the roots of the hair. Nits are the size of a grain of sand and hatch after 9-10 days.
  • Lice: Adult lice are about the size of a sesame seed and can live up to 30 days on the scalp. Lice can’t survive long away from the scalp. They are mostly found near the ears, the nape of the neck, and the forehead. They can also be found in a person’s beard or eyebrows.

Head lice are unpleasant, but they aren’t dangerous. They don’t spread disease and are not a sign of poor hygiene. Head lice are a common problem among children, especially around the beginning of the school year. They can be spread easily in schools and childcare centres. It’s not necessary to keep children with head lice home from school or childcare. Consult our pharmacist to get more information about lice and its treatment options.
